Sometimes It Takes Decades
to Say Love

I sat beside you
     No tears
          No emotion
               No words saying love

We knew     the two of us together
the function of the tubes--
     the air--
          the fluid--
               the release--
from the beginning you told about
those decades ago
as we sat in front of Lucky's
in the green Chevrolet with
     No tears
          No emotion
               No words saying love

I lifted the plastic spoon
of shaved ice--
     the futility--
          the reality--
               the release--
we knew must quickly come
in the sterility, an action
so difficult my hand shook
barely able to maintain
     No tears
          No emotion
               No words saying love.
