Eagles Test

Talons locked, they free-fall
a thousand feet or more
tumbling, wing over wing.
She accepts his first contact,
an act so violent
they can lose each
other in patterns
known only by instinct.
He lures
her by powers
she cannot understand
but to which she must
surrender.

Two eagles

In the moment before disaster
they disengage,
swim upward in widening circles
to repeat the ceremony
until, trust established
she chooses.
